“This may be one of the happiest moments of my life,” a young international student said to me as he sat mesmerized on a remote beach, listening to the rolling surf, and the occasional eagle.
There were no other humans in sight, other than our group of four happy hikers.
We had reached this local hidden gem after a challenging 4-km (return) hike down a steep, rocky, unmarked trail of dense rainforest. When we arrived, as always, the “big reveal,” and long stretch of pristine north Pacific coastline, was so worth it.
For Daniel, this rugged deserted expanse of sand and rocky outcrops, without a building or tourist in sight, revealed a fresh, new perspective and moment of awe.
“I would never experience this in Europe,” he said. He was visibly moved, and watching his face, so was I.
Some of my most cherished memories, and amazing human connections, have involved exploring the road, mountain, or country less travelled.
In our journeys and in life, I’ve found the unexpected has the power to move us deeply, and change how we see ourselves, and the world.
A recent article in AFAR magazine reported one of the top travel trends in 2023 will be searching for lesser-known locales, and “ditching beaten paths for alternative, under-the-radar destinations.”
Well, when it comes to “under-the-radar” destinations these are both my preference and my passion… and especially sharing them with others.
After all, my first (and completely unplanned) trip to Africa was to Swaziland! I literally had to look it up on a map.
Little did I know then, that the adventure to Swazi and the people I met there would change the trajectory of my life, work, and dreams… forever.
