A New Year’s Ritual to Start 2020 with Heart

“Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.” – Buddha

Happy New Year!

Ahh… it’s that sacred time of year to let go of the old and ring in the new.

For me it’s also a perfect time to reflect on what I’ve learned in the past year, then tune into my heart to direct my intention and energy to what matters most to me now.

What are you ready and willing to give your heart to in 2020?

Not sure?

To mark the completion of a year, decade (!) or any important project or event, I have a simple, yet powerful ritual to give me clarity, insight, and guidance moving forward.

Rituals give continuity to our lives and offer meaning to our days, actions, and creations. And I’ve discovered great value in appreciating and witnessing the results of the journey so far.

“The more you appreciate yourself, acknowledge everything in your life, the more you link your heart with your will,” as author Sanaya Roman says.

This simple practice allows you to consciously align your heart, mind, and actions to create what you truly want next with grace and power.

Ok, let’s get this little soul ceremony started.

Here are the steps of the ritual.

  1. Create a sacred space.
Light a candle to represent your own inner light, and focus your attention on your heart. Take three deep breaths.
  2. Release what no longer serves you.
What are you “over” and ready to let go or surrender from your life that is not working? That might include emotions, false limits, beliefs, or relationships. Reflect on these and write 3-5 things down, each on a small piece of paper. (Keep it simple.)
  3. Symbolically let it all go.
One by one, read aloud what you wrote then burn each paper in a fireplace or small fireproof bowl or container.
  4. Acknowledge and appreciate what you have created and completed. In this past year, what have been your biggest wins, successes or dreams achieved? Write it all down. (A colleague calls this the “I did it list.”)
  5. Call in your future, now.
Take a few moments to get present and quiet your mind.
Ask: What do I want to FEEL, experience, or create next in 2020? Write down any thoughts, images, ideas, or guidance that comes to you.
  6. Express gratitude. I like to close simply feeling grateful and saying “Thank You” for all the love and support I’ve received both seen and unseen. You can also thank and acknowledge your own heart and inner wisdom.

For me, this simple practice of completion and appreciation always brings new knowing and perspective. You begin to see your patterns, as well as possibilities and potential, in a new light—and what you might do differently from here on in.

With deeper awareness, you awaken the “magic” of an aligned heart and mind, to create even greater results in life, love, and work.

Here’s one action you can take to get “closure” on 2019, and launch into a brand new year and decade reclaiming your personal power.
