One woman’s search for meaning…

As you read this (if it’s on Feb. 23) I will be attending and speaking at an event called The Best Kept Secret to Success in Life, Love, and Business. As the title suggests, the event’s a happy blend of personal, professional and business development to create success not only your work or career but also in your great big life.

So that got me thinking about what “success” in life really means.

In western culture, most people define success as material or financial wealth. A “successful” business, or person, is earning 6 or 7 figures and living a comfortable, even opulent, lifestyle. We drive around tony neighbourhoods with massive houses, beautifully landscaped properties and sometimes waterfront views… and say, wow these people must be ‘successful.’

Don’t get me wrong. I believe financial success is important, and happen to love money and the beautiful experiences and life it affords me, as well as all it allows me to give to others.

However, I also feel it’s a limited definition of true success, and what gives life meaning, joy, and a good reason to keep calm and carry on.

So let’s go a little deeper here…

By no coincidence, I’ve just finished reading “Man’s Search for Meaning,” by Viktor E. Frankl. One of the great books of the 20th century, I can’t believe it took me this long to read it. Based on his own experiences of several years in Nazi concentration camps,

Frankl, a psychiatrist, shares a riveting account of life, death, and survival in these horrific conditions. He found that while we cannot always avoid suffering, we can choose how to respond to it and find meaning in it.

Frankl also says we can discover meaning in life by creating great work or achievement, and experiencing the beauty of nature, culture, or more importantly the love of another human being.

So what does success in life look like to you?

For me, certainly in the last two years spending time teaching and traveling in Africa, I’ve discovered it’s as important to make a LIFE as it is to make a living.

That means creating work, life—and life experiences—that are meaningful to you, a true expression of who you are, and what (or who) you love and care about.

In short, I believe true success is answering your soul’s calling… and having a great time doing it.

On that note, in Vancouver I’ll be speaking on “Igniting Your Soul Fire,” talking about how to accelerate success by taking action that is guided by your heart’s intelligence as well as your practical mind.

Of course, creating success and realizing big goals and dreams requires action… and doing. That said, success is also achieved by whom you are being.
