Happy almost New Year!
As we wrap up another year many people are reflecting on the mood, events, and achievements (or lack thereof) of 2017 and setting goals and resolutions for a brand new year.
Well, when it comes to creating big dreams and goals I like to keep things simple.
I gave up making New Year’s resolutions many years ago.
As we all know, resolutions almost always fail. They lack excitement, originality, and burning desire, not to mention usually a little too much self-judgement and focus on what others think you ‘should’ be, do, or have. And let’s face it, they are so “last year.”
Rather than make resolutions, I have a little New Year’s ritual of simply choosing one word that helps direct my intention, energy, and inspired actions for the next 12 months.
My word-of-the-year also acts as a guidepost and “theme” that keeps me centered, focused, and aligned with what I want to create or experience.
When it comes to creating your big dreams—or a really big year—focus is everything.
My word for 2017 was “epic.” And what a difference a year makes—when imbued with a powerful one-word intention!
Around my “epic” theme, in the last year I spent four months in Kenya teaching, living, and immersed in the local culture of ancient tribes and modern-day Africans, and connected with some truly amazing people—young and old. If that wasn’t life-changing enough, I also took part in an 11-day “soul safari,” which included witnessing one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara. ‘Epic’ was a perfect description of the grandeur and awe of that experience.
And on a personal note, I feel a deepened awareness, power, and confidence in living my own truth and purpose, which includes helping others activate their visions and dreams so they can follow their true path. So I think my soul might consider that somewhat ‘epic’ and well aligned with the reason I came to the planet.
So after the adventurous year that was 2017, what’s my word-of-the-year is for the upcoming year?
Ready?
For 2018 my word is “expansion” (not my waistline, BTW), with the intent to inspire growth and unlimited possibilities in love, business, creativity, and connection.
In short, I’m focusing on a year of soul-expansion… or as a friend and colleague says ‘soul-level opulence.’ And I’m all in.

- Get clear on your vision or dream. What goals, big or small, could you create or attract this year if you embodied this word?
- Notice what begins to unfold in the New Year as you align your thoughts, plans, and actions with this intention.
